Club de Futbol Monterrey Rayados announces that it has reached an agreement with Argentine coach Matías Almeyda to take over as head coach of the men’s first team, on a two-year contract.
Matías and his coaching staff will join the team in the coming days and begin preparations for the Liga BBVA MX Apertura 2026 tournament.
Almeyda has a career spanning more than three decades in professional football, first as a player and later as a head coach.
Matías is widely recognized for his human qualities, empathy, and leadership. He has a clear and consistent playing model that he implements on the pitch with high standards and conviction.
This combination allows him to build teams with identity, energy, and a proactive style.
As a coach, Matías brings extensive experience and success across leagues and clubs in Argentina, Mexico, the United States, and Europe.
He began his coaching career in 2011 with River Plate, where he earned promotion to the top flight in his first tournament in charge.
A year later, he took over Banfield in Argentina and also guided the club to promotion.
In 2015, he moved to Mexico to coach Guadalajara. With Chivas, he won the Liga BBVA MX title (Clausura 2017), two Copa MX titles (Apertura 2015 and Clausura 2017), the Supercopa MX (2016), and the CONCACAF Champions Cup (2018), sealing one of the most successful eras in the club’s recent history.
He later joined San Jose Earthquakes of MLS, and from 2022 to 2025 he coached AEK Athens, where he won the Greek League and Greek Cup.
In 2025, Almeyda joined Sevilla in Spain, where he remained in charge until March of this year.
As a player, he represented clubs including River Plate (Argentina), Sevilla FC (Spain), Lazio (Italy), Parma (Italy), Inter Milan (Italy), Brescia (Italy), Quilmes (Argentina), Fénix (Argentina), and Lyn Oslo (Norway).
During his playing career, he won the Argentine league title, the Copa Libertadores, Serie A, the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana, the UEFA Super Cup, and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.
He was also part of the Argentina National Team squads for the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups, and won the silver medal at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.
